Historic Landmarks:
The Old State Capitol Building and Restored Legislative Chambers - The Capitol building served as the seat of government for the State of Georgia from 1807 to 1868, and in its legislative chambers the Secession Convention was held in 1861. On this site was an open-air market that included, amidst regular trade, the sale and auction of the enslaved.
Memory Hill Cemetery - Memory Hill is the resting place for both blacks and whites. The cemetery includes a special section for enslaved blacks where the graves are marked by links of chain. Many people associated with Georgia's history are buried here.
Allen's Market - One of the four historic buildings that make up the Milledgeville Allied Arts Center. Allen's Market housed the first black funeral home at a time when it served as the focal point of the black business district. The 1911 building has been adapted into a theatre, meeting and studio space. On display is the exhibition "Structures and Sites" featuring over 80 photographs of Milledgeville past and present.
Flagg Chapel Baptist Church - Flagg Chapel Church is believed to be one the first black churches in Milledgeville. Built by Wilkes Flagg, a man dedicated to his community and to the spiritual and cultural nourishment of both free and enslaved blacks.
